Fifty Shades of Normal
Fifty Shades of Normal Since its publication in 1996, Robe Harrier's book It's Perfectly Normal has appeared on the American Library Association list of challenged books. It's Perfectly Normal was the LA'S #1 Most Challenged Book of 2005. The book is intended for ages 10 and up, and it explains the various physical and psychological changes that occur during puberty including information about sex and sexual health. The books text is paired with cartoonist illustrations by Michael Embezzler. Many religious institutions are posed to the information and the viewpoints discussed within because masturbation, abortion, homosexuality and other alternative sexual lifestyles are described as being ââ¬Å"perfectly normal. â⬠It's Perfectly Normal has been criticized for mocking religious beliefs by stating ââ¬Å"some religions call masturbation a sin. But masturbating cannot hurt youâ⬠(48), and Harris then goes on to provide images of a young boy and young girl masturbating comple te with an explanation how to masturbate. In June 1996, John Chamberlain, a member of the Provo (Utah) Library aid It's Perfectly Normal ââ¬Å"should be banned from the children's section because it's graphic illustrations of male and female anatomy, including sex organs, and its discussions of intercourse, masturbation, and homosexualityâ⬠(Forester 205). The Catholic Church believes that ââ¬Å"masturbation is an intrinsically and seriously disordered actâ⬠(Vatican) and ââ¬Å"any sexual act outside of marriage not intended for procreation is considered inappropriateâ⬠(Vatican).Harris explains that ââ¬Å"sexual intercourse-having sex-can involve the penis and the vagina, or the mouth and the initials, or the penis and the anusâ⬠(15). While the book is factually correct, many challenges are based on whether this information is appropriate for children. In 2001, the book was restricted to elementary school pupils with parental permission in Anchorage, Alaska due to objections to the book's ââ¬Å"value statementsâ⬠and because ââ¬Å"marriage is mentioned once in the whole book, while homosexual relationships are allocated an entire sectionâ⬠(ala. Org). Furthermore, the book was also challenged, but retained in 2002 after a conservative Christian group, the Republican Leadership Council, characterized the book as ââ¬Å"vulgarâ⬠and trying ââ¬Å"to minimize or even negate that homosexuality is a problemâ⬠(ala. Org). The book has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion chain in the USA, but in contrast, nowhere does the book describe the virtue of chastity or abstinence (American Life League). Critics say the book promotes abortion by listing nine reasons to have an abortion (Dudgeon). The book's description of the abortion process is very clinical, and it avoids any discussion about whether abortion is morally right or the various social views surrounding the epic. It's Perfectly Normal was challe nged but retained in the children's section of the Mexico-Durian County, Mo. Library in 1997 when a Baptist minister complained not only about this title, but also about other ââ¬Å"material concerning family sensitive issues, such as sexuality, the death of a loved one, or the birth processâ⬠(ala. Org). As per a BBC report, ââ¬Å"all the religions have taken strong positions on abortion; they believe that the issue encompasses profound issues of life and death, right and wrong, human relationships and the nature of society, that make it a major religious onceâ⬠(BBC. Co. UK). Harris wrote the book with the intent to provide facts that ââ¬Å"were accurate and up-to-date and that the text was age-appropriateâ⬠(arbitrators. Com). She later commented that ââ¬Å"l knew that illustrator Michael Embezzler and I had created a book that provided kids and teens with honest and accurate information, which they have a right to and need in order to stay healthy as they enter and go through puberty and adolescenceâ⬠(Crispin). Harris succeeded in this regard, and accordingly, the book has been highly recognized and honored by the ALA, Booklets, Child Magazine, The New York Times, Planned Parenthood, and Publishers' Weekly (Floorboards). While some religious groups assert that the book ââ¬Å"goes too far and even boarders on child pornographyâ⬠(American Life League), ââ¬Å"removal of a book for political, social, or moral reasons is legally prohibitedâ⬠(Forester 205). The American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights states that ââ¬Å"librarians and governing bodies should maintain that parents-?and only parents-?have the right and the responsibility to restrict the access of their children-?and only their children-?to Barry resourcesâ⬠(Floorboards).

In Murmuring Judges, David Hare uses Barry to represent the stereotypical bent policemen that were seen as typical in the late 1980s and early 90s
In Murmuring Judges, David Hare uses Barry to represent the stereotypical ââ¬Ëbentââ¬â¢ policemen that were seen as typical in the late 1980s and early 90s. Through Barry, Hare shows not only corruption in the police force, as evidenced by Barry planting the Semtex, but also suggests that the police were overworked and under budgeted, ââ¬Å"too much overtimeâ⬠. Here, Hare shows the dichotomy of sympathy for the police alongside corruption, as he shows Barry to be trying to do is job in difficult times, however, the overarching role of Barry is to show corruption and immorality in policing. Throughout the play, Hare shows the effect of the 1984 Criminal Evidence Act, intended to make policing more about paperwork, and shows how the police feel it is undermining their job; ââ¬Å"we should all just sit in the nick and make policy draftsâ⬠highlights how this has changed the nature of policy. Barry is presented as against this, and continues to use older methods of policing, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢ my method. â⬠Through this, Hare portrays police corruption, as Barryââ¬â¢s methods are often immoral and even illegal. Hare also presents Barry to see some crimes as ââ¬Å"boringâ⬠and ââ¬Å"pointlessâ⬠, which suggests he is only interested in crimes he can get a good result for, such as bringing down Travis and Fielding in Gerard McKinnonââ¬â¢s crime. Hare also shows Barry to think police resources are wasted by saying ââ¬Å"and yet look at usâ⬠, highlighting his personal frustration as again shown by ââ¬Å"please tell me, what is the point? â⬠Interest, Barry seemingly has the same perception of lawyers as the audience have through Sir Peter, suggesting they are ââ¬Å"rich bastardsâ⬠who participate in ââ¬Å"tax evasionâ⬠. It could then be argued that Barry feels justified in his corruption, as the government is also corrupt, ââ¬Å"the government happily lets rich bastards walk away withâ⬠. ââ¬Å"You used to be smartâ⬠suggests Barry wasnââ¬â¢t always corrupt, which again suggests his actions are due to his frustration at the justice system. The relationship between Barry and Sandra gives the audience insight into both Barryââ¬â¢s character and feelings towards women at the time. Although there is a difference in rank between the pair, DC to PC, Barry is never shown to treat men in a lesser position with the same patronising manner he uses towards Sandra. Here, Hare portrays sexism within the police at the time, which is furthered by Sandra and Barryââ¬â¢s affair, as it could be argued that Sandra is stereotypically ââ¬Ësleeping her way to the topââ¬â¢. Hare shows Barry to ââ¬Å"get a kick out of secrecyâ⬠, which is in reference to his affair but is also evidenced in his corruption, as no-one else is portrayed in this manner. The fact that Barry is shown to be ââ¬Å"relieved at the change of subjectâ⬠from his corruption could suggest that he is ashamed, as he is ââ¬Å"able to relaxâ⬠once they are discussing something else. However, Barryââ¬â¢s lack of personal morals as highlighted in his relationship with Sandra, ââ¬Å"I waited for youâ⬠¦I had a rugby matchâ⬠, which suggests a general disregard could be used to argue that Barry most likely is indifferent about having planted the Semtex. This representation of the police as reckless and immoral suggests Hare views the police in a negative light as they would allow innocent men to go to prison, as shown by Gerard. This was undoubtedly influenced by high profile cases such as the Guilford Four or the Birmingham Six, where men were unjustly sent down for bombings. I did my trick. It always worksâ⬠suggests the extent of Barry corruption, implying he has framed people before, but more importantly, he knows he can get away with it, through which Hare shows the dangers of immorality in the police. ââ¬Å"You should go on Mastermindâ⬠in reference to Barry shows that he is a respected figure in amongst the officers, with which Hare coul d suggest that Barry was in a position to spread corruption throughout the force, as he is admired by the lower ranks. Hare uses this again to highlight the danger of immorality and corruption in the police. Earlier, Barry is also presented as part of the ââ¬Ëboys clubââ¬â¢, as Hare shows banter between the male officers, ââ¬Å"I was conducting an interviewâ⬠¦ with the barmaidâ⬠¦ horizontallyâ⬠, suggesting that Barry is one of the ââ¬Ëladsââ¬â¢. Increasingly, Barry is presented as a misogynist and a racist throughout the play, not only towards Sandra but also towards Irina and Gerard. This attitude is shown through the dialogue between Barry and Irina on pg101; ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t take lecturesâ⬠towards Irina suggests he sees her as beneath him. However, Hare also uses this scene to strengthen the presentation of Barryââ¬â¢s disliking towards lawyers, as shown by ââ¬Å"when was the last time anyone was sick on your wigâ⬠, which suggests Barry sees lawyers as out of touch with the real job of justice. This is furthered by ââ¬Å"why donââ¬â¢t you go sit on a committee, ironic as Irina does exactly that at the end of the play, which shows Barry to believe lawyers to be bossy, and ââ¬Å"something-must-be-doneââ¬â¢rsâ⬠, as Beckett describes them, but ultimately to be useless. At the end of the play, as earlier mentioned, Irina decides to try and change the justice system; in contrast, Barry is presented as exactly the same, as he is still frustrated at the system, ââ¬Å"if they spent half the time trying to support the coppersâ⬠. In the earlier scene, Hare portrays Jimmy as out of the club, which is highlighted by Barry saying ââ¬Å"English sense of humourâ⬠, again showing Barry to be part of a very, male dominated system. Hare also presents Barry as casually racist here, as there is no evidence that Jimmy is not English, an attitude which is also shown by Barry towards Gerard, ââ¬Å"he was kind of Irishâ⬠, a reference to the negative view of the Irish at the time due to the IRA. This also shows the system to be casually racist, as we see that because Gerard is Irish, it is much more believable that he would plant explosives. Hare shows this to be wrong through his portrayal of Gerard, who is hugely different from the stereotype of a criminal. To a lesser extent, police corruption is also shown by Barryââ¬â¢s treatment of Keith, as Barry is suggested to have ââ¬Å"promised him a cautionâ⬠suggesting Barry was using bribery to get Keith to cooperate. Overall, despite the suggestion of sympathy for Barry as someone trying to do a difficult job, Barry is largely presented as everything Hare dislikes about the police, as he is shown to be racist, corrupt, immoral and misogynistic. Hare uses Barry as an example of wider police corruption, suggesting that Barry isnââ¬â¢t an isolated case but the whole system is corrupt. Barry is juxtaposed against Sandra who is shown to be conscientious and willing to make a difference. However, Hare presents all characters trying to make the system better as isolated and seen as inferior, as shown with Irina, whilst Barry is shown as ââ¬Ëone of the boysââ¬â¢, overall suggesting that people like Barry will ultimately continue with ââ¬Å"their methodâ⬠whilst Sandra and such will fail to make a difference. This representation is shown to be the worn outcome for Hare, who is a supporter of change but this represents the reality of policing at the time.
Comparing IFRS to GAAP Essay
In the Accounting industry, there are various principles and guidelines by which financial accountants, analysts, and organizations need to abide by. The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) issues standards (IFRS) that have been adopted by the United States and several countries outside of the U.S. (Kimmel, Weygandt & Kieso, 2010). The IFRS along with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), professionals in the accounting industry use these guidelines as a baseline on which accounting practices are built upon. These standards are governed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which ultimately oversees U.S. financial markets and accounting standard-setting bodies. Moving forward, the elements of IFRS and GAAP will be discussed to illustrate the similarities and differences and how it relates to Accounting and used in business practice. IFRS 8-1: Fair-Value Measurement Fair value measurements provide users of financial statements with an accurate picture of the value of a companyââ¬â¢s assets. Both IFRS and GAAP require firms to include information regarding fair value measurements practices in the notes of financial statements. Under either system, companies will be required to report assets at either book value or fair value, depending on the situation. As a general rule of thumb, all assets in the same class must receive the same valuation treatment. In regards to the value of receivables, IFRS uses a two-tiered method that first analyzes individual receivables, and then looks at receivables as a whole to determine if there is any impairment. (KPMG, 2012). Comparing IFRS to GAAP Essay IFRS 9-1: Component Depreciation Component depreciation happens when an asset has fundamentally different parts that should be depreciated with different treatment. Under IFRS, firms are required to use component depreciation if the parts of the asset offer varying patterns of benefit. The reasoning behind this is that it provides a clearing picture of the assetââ¬â¢s book value. This method is also permitted under GAAP, but U.S. companies rarely use it in practice (Ernst & Young 2012) IFRS 9-2: Revaluation of plant assets The reevaluation of plant assets can be defined as the process of change values from book value to fair value. This process is required in the event that there have been substantial economic changes in the market have occurred. For example, if a company purchased a building 10 years ago and it has appreciated due to a real estate boom, it can be reevaluated to fair value. If an asset is to be reevaluated under IFRS, it is required that all assets in its class must be treated with the same valuation method. This ensures that companies maintain consistency in valuations for the same types of assets. IFRS 9-3 Product Development Expenditures Companies that utilize GAAP standards are required to expense all research and development costs by reporting them on the income statement. In contrast, IFRS only places this requirement on research costs. Once technological viability has been reached, it is optional for a company to start reporting development costs as capital expenditures. This allows the costs to be depreciated over the useful life that the technology provides (Brice, 2009) Comparing IFRS to GAAP Essay IFRS 10-2 Contingent Liability In the most basis sense, a contingent liability is an obligation that has a probability of occurring in the future. These items will not be included in financial statements, but should be disclosed within the notes. The company will also be required to measure the nature of the contingent liability in subsequent accounting periods. (Ernst & Young 2014) Imagine an oil companyà that was involved in an accidental oil spill in the Pacific Ocean. An example of a contingent liability would be potential fines imposed by the Union for environmental violations. The company may not know the extent of the fines yet, but they should be disclosed as a contingent liability in the notes. Because the fines can be predicted, it is necessary to report the information to users of the financial statements. IFRS 10-3 Similarities and Differences in Accounting Liabilities The basic principles of accounting for liabilities between GAAP and IFRS nearly identical, but there are several minor differences. On the balance sheet, GAAP requires liabilities be reported in order of liquidity, while IFRS requires reverse order of liquidity. When it comes to reporting interest expenses, GAAP permits both the effective interest rate method and the straight-line method; however IFRS will only allow the effective interest rate method. Furthermore, IFRS has special rules for contingent liabilities, which is not a requirement under GAAP. In the grand scheme, the differences between IFRS and GAAP are fairly small. Each has specific requirements related to the reporting of assets and liabilities, which can result in slightly different financial results. Both FASB and IASB are working actively to modernize their accounting rules with changes in the evolving business climate. In summary, both systems are important for maintaining high quality accounting standards in the global economy. Comparing IFRS to GAAP Essay References Jerry J. Weygandt ââ¬â Paul D. Congressional Consideration of New Deal Legislation Essay
Congressional Consideration of New Deal Legislation - Essay Example It wasnââ¬â¢t but 50 years ago that America was engulfed in the ââ¬Å"Great Depressionâ⬠. Political pundits and members of Congress alike compare our current situation as the worst economic climate since the Great Depression. While the times of that era were certainly tough, the strength and enduring spirit of the American people proved to be resolute and we as a country rose from the ashes like a phoenix. While the spirit of the American people has an ethereal reason on why we overcame the Great Depression, any well-versed scholar of American history knows that it was indeed President Franklin Delanor Rooseveltââ¬â¢s New Deal that catapulted our country out of the economic abyss. ââ¬Å"We have had recessions before and we will have them again; and always, when we do, we can be thankful to the New Deal. For nearly half a century, its innovations in the thirties have helped to keep recession from deepening into depression.â⬠1 The Great Depression lasted from the end of 1929 to the early 1940s, beginning in the United States but slowly spreading to other countries as well, because they had become economically dependent on each other. This era is a widely studied and thoroughly examined time in American history. There are numerous underlying reasons for the Depression, and there are many theories on why it occurred. Some of the seeds that gave root to the Great Depression can be linked to events far before the time of that gloomy era. ââ¬Å"The roots of the Great Depression can be traced back to the world war of 1914-1918 and even beyond. Some authorities describe it as the ultimate collapse of the industrial revolution, with the machine devouring the manâ⬠¦..Between 1920 and 1930 economists ceased pondering the question of ââ¬ËAmericaââ¬â¢s capacity to produce,ââ¬â¢ which had preoccupied them for fifty years and turned belatedly to ââ¬Å"Americaââ¬â¢s capacity to consume, about which the y

Using Perceptual Maps in Marketing simulation Essay
Using Perceptual Maps in Marketing simulation - Essay Example This will be followed by direct impact/results of these decisions which will be generated by the simulation itself. Following this explanation, the interdependence between differentiation and positioning a product and a service is explained. Besides this, the results of the decision of repositioning the brand of Cruiser Thor or introducing a whole new product line will also be discussed. Besides this, the overall effect of Product Life Cycle on the brandââ¬â¢s performance and the scenarios presented in the simulation is also discussed, which will give a comprehensive summary of selected marketing plans and its impact on the brandsââ¬â¢ performance. 1. Scenario 1 1.1 The Situation Cruiser Thorr is the market leader in the motorcycle industry where the consumers symbolize the brand with lifestyle. Lifestyle positioning is the strongest element in the motorcycle industry and Cruiser Thorr enjoys the brand image of a premium product with all the features and deliverables which make s it the first choice of the consumers who can afford it. Situation 1 of the Simulation presents a scenario where the Cruiser is losing Sales because its ideal target market (men in the age-group of 25-50) is growing old and is no longer interested in the lifestyle image of the brand. Moreover, the alternative market of the youngsters do not relate to the image of the brand of Cruiser. Therefore, the brand had to be repositioned in the market and around those elements which would cater to the consumer preferences as portrayed in the market research. 1.2 Recommended Solutions The possible solution was to reposition the brand. I selected the parameters of Price, Service Offerings, Product Uniqueness, Product Design and Style. The results showed by the simulation were that the parameters of Product Style and Design and Product Uniqueness were not appropriately selected. I selected the Service Offerings because the competing brands had good services to offer and that, because of the hig h price of the Cruiser, it had to be complimented with Financial Services. Besides this, the Product Style and Design would have complimented the Lifestyle image. I did not select the Lifestyle parameter exclusively because the trend in the target market showed that this was no longer as important to the consumers as it was when they were young. 1.3 The Results As lifestyle image is the most important component in the Motorcycle Industry, the brand will sustain its image. Along with this, the Quality Engineering parameter also had to be included as it incorporated all the other factors such as the engineââ¬â¢s performance, the design and its overall quality; which are important to the consumers. 2. Scenario 2 2.1 The Situation The second Scenario was that the brand of Cruiser was lagging in sales despite repositioning it. The market dynamics through research showed that the young men, aged from 20 ââ¬â 35 comprised of a strong market potential. Now the question was either to reposition Cruiser Thorr again or to launch a separate product called RRoth ââ¬â a much lighter version of the Cruiser. 2.2. Recommended Solution The solution was to launch a separate product line under the brand of RRoth with low prices, more financial services, unique design and the quality persistent with Thorrââ¬â¢s image. The idea of repositioning Cruiser would be harmful because Cruiser Thorr is the premium brand of the company and repositioning it in the

Bioterrorism - Essay Example This primitive way of introducing deadly microorganisms in the society is now modernized by the advancement of science and technology which allows scientists to create strains of germs and viruses that can harm the society either by causing diseases or making the human immune system more susceptible to diseases. One of the most recent examples of bioterrorism attack is the 2001 case of anthrax in the United States which caused a global stir by killing five people and infecting 17 others. The adverse effects of bioterrorism can never be overstated. It should be noted that these attacks are often aimed at creating mass panic and disruption in the community. Diseases which are often incurable propagate chaos and bring in more problems in the social and political arena. Niagara falls - Term Paper Example The City known as Niagara Falls was once a Township number 2 to Mount Dorchester. It was suggested that the United Empire Loyalists would inhibit it in the year 1781.Its roads were Concessions and Lines that became the main grids, the Portage Road that passes through Niagara Falls, and driveways that connect homesteads to the main arteries that became the Lundyââ¬â¢s Lane1. The Portage road was used to portage goods in land through the Niagara Falls in the western side of the River. The area previously was known as Mount Dorchester was renamed Stamford Township. The Stamford Township played a key role in the war of 1812- 1814 .Since the area was a major site for the battle. This battle of the Lundyââ¬â¢s Lane was the worst battle in Canada soil. After it ended the US, army attacked the Bridgewater Mills that was located in Dufferin Islands .There was constructions of hydroelectric stations in the first decade of the 20th century. In the 1920s and 1950s there were many projects introduced, those were essential to the development of electricity in the Niagara Falls2. Economy of Stamford flourished and this led to the development of communities in the township especially in terms of trade and commerce. The area saw a growth in tourism where the debate about who won the battle about the Lundyââ¬â¢s lane paved a way for tourists to visit the area. With the plentiful source of hydroelectric power by the waterfalls, many industries boomed especially electrochemical and electrometallurgical industries in the early 20th century. The industry in the 1970 and 1980s began to move out of the city due to economic recession and with the increase of global competition in the industry-manufacturing sector. Internet privacy - Essay Example People are encouraged to ensure timely update of their antiviruses and to be sure with what they click at any given instance. The widespread use of social media platforms has further aggravated the matter as personal information is made accessible to those within the social brackets thus increasing the chances of cyber crime. Internet privacy relates to the right of personal confidentiality on the storing as well as availing of information to third parties through the internet on specific issues. This is regarded as a subset of computer privacy in the ever growing information sector. The level of privacy in the internet can be divided into personally identifying information which refers to any information that is used in the recognition of given individual factors such as physical address or other personal bio-data and non-personal identifying information which excludes any personal information regarding an individual (Imparato, 2000). Countries all over the world as well as the United States of America are trying all workable methods that are aimed at ensuring total protection of personal information by maintaining their privacy (Frackman, Martin, & Ray, 2002). With the proliferation of social media, avoiding revealing sensitive data can be difficult making laws and government regulations necessary for maintaining privacy. One of the steps towards enhancing internet privacy is by encouraging people not to carelessly or mistakenly revealing personal information via the internet. One can easily made public their personal bio-data over the internet without being fully aware of it hence the need to be very careful when using the internet. One should make use of pseudonyms instead of using real names and actual personal information. The browsers used should not be in a position to leak out personal information or retain them for a longer period of time (Jakubiak,

How Parents Treat Sons And Daughters Differently Essay
How Parents Treat Sons And Daughters Differently - Essay Example This child then becomes the adult of the society, and the subsequent domino effect for the creation of all prejudices, biases and polarity comes into existence. Taken objectively, because essentially the male and female child are intrinsically very different, it is virtually impossible even for the most passionate of parents to claim that they have sustained a just rule for all. The study finds its rationale in the fact that it is essential to understand where the root cause of discrimination is embedded within the human behavior, as it later on goes on to produce social, economic, religious and moral prejudices within the human community - a reality that is causing all the unrest in out world. There quite a few studies, which have worked on this project. "In the United States, a person's gender has affected the level of education she is likely to receive, the occupation she will take up, and the wages she will be paid" (Blau 1998, U.S. Department of Education 2000). Morgan, Lye, and Condran (1988) discover that sons reduce the risk of marital disruption by 9% more than do daughters. In the same domain, Dahl and Moretti (no date) find that having a girl considerably affects marriage and divorce rate; being 3.4% less likely to be living with her father compared to a first-born son. Some studies have found that "fathers interact more with infant sons and are more engaged with adolescent sons than daughters" (Barnett and Baruch 1987). There is also accord among researchers that fathers spend less time in childcare than mothers do (Pleck and Masciadrelli 2004). METHODS In order to gain a basic insight into the issue, a study was designed which would give an idea about the issue. The results would help us understand whether the incidence of this problem is existence or is it just an academic model. Participants The volunteer participants of the study were 25 pairs of brothers and sisters. They were different in sibling order, and even in the total number of siblings. But from every family, one son and one daughter were selected. For 25 families, the total number of participants thus came out to be 50. The inclusion criterion was children aged from 4 to 12. They were not told about the exact of the study, so that their biases and preconceived notions would not come into play. Also, the same tool was given to all of them, seeking their opinion about how they thought their parents treated them, in general. Procedures The tool used was a specifically designed questionnaire that would measure up to the basic requirements within the household, school and neighborhood of children aged 4-12. as literacy and cognitive understand would be an obvious issue, therefore the questionnaire was administered to all of them through an interview, wherein the standardized items were asked from all the participants in isolation. It is very important to mention here that as children are well under-aged to make their own legal and rational decisions, therefore an undertaking was also signed by their parents which would admit them participating in this study. The exact scope of the study was told to the parents. Dependent Measures The questionnaire itself addressed issues of psychological, sociological, familial, economic and

Human Resources Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 3
Human Resources Management - Essay Example The organisational structure in PM is hierarchical, whereas, the organisational culture in HRM is flexible based upon the business requirements. The training process in PM is limited to non-managerial staff only while in HRM the process involves all key employees within an organisation including non-managerial staff as well. The outlook of employee relations in PM is ââ¬Ëpluralistââ¬â¢, which involves low trust however, employee relation outlook in HRM is ââ¬Ëunitarist,ââ¬â¢ which involves high extent of trust. In addition, PM is inclined towards reducing the overall cost of HR on the other hand HRM is inclined towards optimum utilisation of HR and controlling the cost associated with it (Henderson, 2011). HRM function at ASDA plays a key role in meeting the long term purpose of the organisation. Workforce planning is the primary function of HRM at ASDA, which determines the workforce requirements both in present and future context. ASDA also promotes employment opportunities through its recruitment and selection function of HRM. Training and performance appraisals are the most vital part of HRM at ASDA, which influences employee performance and their productivity level. Furthermore, employee acknowledgment and motivation is included in the HRM function, which helps in contributing towards the long term strategy of the organisation (Wilton, 2010). HRM as mentioned above plays a key role in workforce planning wherein the actual requirement of workforce is determined in the organisation. In addition, HRM has the responsibility of recruiting employees in the organisation and training them in an appropriate manner to enhance their skills as per the business requirement. Performance appraisal and employee motivation are the key roles of HRM in ASDA, which helps in alleviating the performance along with the productivity level of employees through employee
Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson Essay Example for Free
Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson Essay ââ¬Å"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what people thinkâ⬠(Emerson lines 30-31). Ralph Waldo Emerson was the transcendentalist leader in the 1830s which influenced his beliefs in his essay. He uses examples to compose the conclusion that people should follow their own instincts and be an individual. Emersonââ¬â¢s ideas on individualism and self trust in ââ¬Å"Self- Reliance,â⬠were influenced by religion and the rise of transcendentalism. Emerson was influenced by beliefs of different religions during the time of the 1830s. In his essay, Emerson states, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦if I am the Devilââ¬â¢s child, I will live then from the Devilâ⬠(Emerson line 26). Basically, he is saying that no matter what his values are, even if they are bad, he will not change them because that is who he is. Everyone should trust their own beliefs because that is what makes them the individual that they are. Emersonââ¬â¢s writing was influenced by religion, by not only believing in Gods views, but by believing in your own. Emerson himself writes ââ¬Å"What have I to do with the sacredness of traditions, if I live wholly from within?â⬠(Emerson lines 22-23). He is insisting that he doesnââ¬â¢t need God to know his own beliefs. If your religious views are different than other individuals, you should stay that way because thatââ¬â¢s who you are. You should follow your innermost beliefs and not change just because others think differently than you do. Emerson believes that you donââ¬â¢t have to follow any religious traditions because you have your own customs within, which is being an individual. Ralph Waldo Emerson was influenced by transcendentalism, because at the time he led this movement. As the prominent writer Emerson puts it, ââ¬Å"It is easy in the world to live after the worldââ¬â¢s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps within perfect sweetness the independence of solitudeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Emerson lines 35-38). In making this comment, Emerson argues that even when other people around you speak their thoughts, the thought of independence should be a constant. You cannot completely isolate yourself, but one should maintain ones own sense of independence while being immersed in a social setting. Individuals must find a balance between being dependent on others in a social sense, while maintaining their own sense of independence from the opinions of others. According to Emerson, ââ¬Å"Whose would be a man, must be aà conformistâ⬠(Emerson line 15). In other words, he believes that if you only do what others do, you are not being who youââ¬â¢re supposed to be; you are being who others have determined you to be. Everyone should trust their own beliefs and not everyone elseââ¬â¢s. This influences the theme by not conforming to society and the effects that they have upon individuals. Emersonââ¬â¢s ideas on individualism and self trust in ââ¬Å"Self- Reliance,â⬠were influenced by religion and the rise of transcendentalism. The transcendentalist leader, Ralph Waldo Emerson believed in the importance of individualism and to follow your own instincts. He shows the importance of being yourself and not conforming to society nor their beliefs. Everyone should be who you are and not change because of the different beliefs around you. Everyone is different and unique in their own way and thatââ¬â¢s what makes us individuals.

Water Resources in Malaysia
Water Resources in Malaysia Abstract Malaysia is a island around with ocean. It seems that there are lots of fresh water can be obtained. And I found that Malaysia received an abundance of rainfall per year. And they are rich with water resources. Also, Malaysia have bottled water in anywhere. The government often provides many bottled water to poor people and dry place. the size of bottled water is large and large in Malaysia, and then, each family all possess some bottled water at home. Finally, I want to suggest the factors and use other ideas to further support the solution. Introduction First, I found some information about fresh water in Malaysia. There are lots of solutions online. Although, Malaysia is surrounded by ocean, and it received an abundance of rainfall. They also rich with water resources. Theà south of Malaysia and north of Malaysia are all need more water. And there are many sewage sources, like lots of industry and garbage in the country. So, many river would become very bad, likes there are many green points covered the river, you will smell bad and you cant use this water. In Malaysia, the supply of water is inadvisable for our. They do not have perfect protection of system. If one river be polluted, other rivers also be polluted. Because of this, many aquatic animals will be died. Likes whale will be disappointed in the world cause the ocean be destroyed. Therefore, I mean that the system of water resources should be improved. Methodology From the internet, I find that some websites about the supply of water in Malaysia. And I saw many bad things about bad environment in Malaysia. This means that there are lots of problem in Malaysias water system. They have many sewage sources into river because of many chemistry industries, likes sewage treatment plants, manufacturing industry, animals industry etc. and I also saw the other strategies, that is bottled water using. Its really reliable for peoples life. This is an ideas from unknown author. And I saw a website published by that author. He is famous person, so, I believe that very will. In the internet, I spent more times to research the different topic.and they can give me different ideas. Therefore, I know what is different topic. Findings From the internet, I found the chart of water resources about Malaysia. And the chart describes the number of river is dirty or clean. From the chart, we know that the situation of river is becoming better and better during 2005 to 2012. Cause government express they has the rule about protect the fresh water. And they also purchase the water from china. And the part of slightly polluted also become better and better. In the final, the part of polluted is becoming smaller and smaller. And from the internet, I know a lot of problems about water resources. But now, they can use bottled water to keep working and living. And the water environments situation will not become bad. Discussion In findings, there are one issue that I can talk. From above, I can know the China hold lots of fresh water, so Malaysia purchase the fresh water from china is right. And the Malaysias water system is becoming better during 2005 to 2012. The pollution start to become a little condition, people can possess the clean place to live. On the other hand, I think Malaysia can save the fresh water by themselves. They can built many techniques to survive the water.they can do it without others help. And other countries also have enough water, its better for Malaysia to life. They can acquire these water from other place. But, they should take out some ideas for their water resources. Also, the government should protect the river by all citizen. Someone think that Malaysia government should award some strategies for water environment. I agree with it, I also think bottled water use is right choose. Therefore, I support the strategies to use and keep. Conclusions and Recommendations à à Overall, in my view, the alternative of bottled water use and protect the water environment are all right. But now, I think protect water environment is right for us. Because its the basic reason for improve their water environment. To solve this problem, the water system will go original situation. And now, they should purchase the bottled water from other countries. That also is a big problem now, it will cause other pollution for the world. However, I think that they should balance the water use and environment protection. Only do this, their water resources can be keep streaming. The Role of Mental Variation in Cognitive Science :: Cognitive Sciences Scientific Essays
The Role of Mental Variation in Cognitive Science ABSTRACT: What is the role of mental variation in cognitive science? I will attempt to answer this question by dividing it into two separate questions: (1) what role does mental variation already (or implicitly) play in cognitive science? and (2) would cognitive science benefit by inquiring (explicitly) into the role of mental variation? I will attempt to show that mental variation already plays an important (though not always explicit) role in cognitive science. Additionally, I will suggest that explicating the role of mental variations in cognition may be seen as a vital component of maintaining the strength of certain approaches and "schools" of cognitive science. (1) Preliminary Remarks (a) Introduction What is the role of mental variation in cognitive science? I will attempt to answer this question, as it often happens in philosophy, by dividing it into two separate questions: (1) What role does mental variation already (implicitly) play in cognitive science? and (2) Would cognitive science benefit by inquiring (explicitly) into the role of mental variation? I will attempt to show that mental variation already plays an important, although not always explicit, role in cognitive science. Additionally, I will suggest that explicating the role of mental variation in cognition may be seen as a vital component of maintaining the strength of certain approaches and "schools" of cognitive science. To illustrate this, let me present the relevance of variation in disputes between the connectionist and more traditional theories of cognition. The dispute between more traditional (propositional and "language of thought" based) understanding of cognitive science and recent connectionist theories may be seen as centred, in part, on the role of variation (manipulation) in cognition. More traditional account would appeal to the fact that the correspondence between formal languages and propositional content may be seen as dependent upon the combinatorial structure of strings of symbols. Thus, one may claim that sentences have parts with both fixed and adjustable meanings and that we form new meaningful sentences by rearranging these parts in new combinations. In this case, the ability to vary parts of structured sentences may be seen as quite significant: this ability would help us account for our understanding of propositions we never encountered before. Instead of appealing to the paradigms of cognition which involve either strings of symbols or some sort of propositional structure, connectionists would rather appeal to some type of neural architecture. They argue that the properties of some sort of functional networks in cognition represent the properties of neural activity much closer than the properties of any sequential symbol-processing system.

Huckleberry Finn :: essays research papers
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is often considered to be Twain's masterpiece. It combined his raw humor with startlingly mature material to create a novel that directly attacked many of the traditions the South held dear. Huckleberry Finn is the main character, and it is through his eyes that the South is revealed and judged. His companion, a runaway slave named Jim, provides Huck with friendship and protection during their journey along the Mississippi. The novel begins with Huck himself writing the story. He briefly describes what has happened to him since The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. After Huck and Tom discovered twelve thousand dollars in treasure, Judge Thatcher invested the money for them. Huck was adopted by the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson, both of whom took pains to raise him properly. Dissatisfied with his new life, Huck runs away. Tom Sawyer manages to bring Huck back by promising to start a band of robbers. All the young boys in town join Tom's band, and they use a hidden cave as their hideout. However, many of them soon become bored with the make-believe battles and so the band falls apart. Soon thereafter Huck sees footprints in the snow which he recognizes as his Pa's. Huck realizes that Pa has returned to claim his money, and so he quickly runs to Judge Thatcher and "sells" his share of the money for a "consideration" of a dollar. Pa catches Huck and makes him hand over the dollar, and threatens to beat Huck if he ever goes to school again. Judge Thatcher and the Widow try to gain court custody of Huck, but a new judge in town refuses to separate Huck from Pa. Soon thereafter, Pa steals Huck away from the Widow's house and takes him to a log cabin. Huck says that he enjoys the life at first, but he soon decides to escape after Pa starts to frequently beat him. Soon thereafter Pa returns to the town and Huck seizes the chance to escape. He saws his way out of the log cabin, kills a pig and spreads the blood as if it were his own, and then takes a canoe and floats downstream to Jackson's Island. Once there he sets up camp and hides out. A few days later Huck stumbles onto a still smoldering campfire on the island. He is frightened but decides to discover who the other person is.

Major League Baseball Salaries: How Much is Too Much? Essay -- Argumen
Major League Baseball Salaries: How Much is Too Much? Twenty-five million dollars made per year. Over one hundred fifty-four thousand dollars made per game. Over forty-seven thousand dollars earned per at bat. Sounds a little ridiculous, does it not? That is what current Texas Ranger shortstop Alex Rodriguez earns to play the game of baseball (azcentral.com). Baseball is a game that children have been playing in schoolyards and fields for the past one hundred years. It may not be a game anymore. On the Major League level it has become a business. This is where the problem starts. Others associated with baseball do not see any problem. All businesses are entitled to the best employees they can afford. If the owner wishes to pay larger salaries, then he/she is at liberty to do this because he/she is in charge of the operations of the business. Baseball is no different. If New York Yankeesââ¬â¢ owner, George Steinbrenner, chooses to spend $125 million on playersââ¬â¢ salaries each year, who will stop him? If Minnesota Twinsââ¬â¢ owner, Carl Pohlad, decides to only spend $25 million on playersââ¬â¢ salaries, who tells him to spend more? The answer of course is nobody, because baseball is a business. Each franchise is run by an individual owner who makes the business decisions. Compared to long ago, baseball has transformed from being the sport people have a passion for to an egotistical business of super-agents and ten million dollar players (azcentral.com). This essay will introduce the situation that Major League Baseball is in with regards to its playersââ¬â¢ salaries. It will also describe how the salaries escalating at the rate they are is hurting the game overall by pushing the fans awa... ...ball itself. Health and Medical Careers
There are hundreds of different medically related careers. Some of the jobs involve close contact with patients whereas others are to do with organisation and management or with providing essential support services. There are opportunities for people with all levels of qualifications from none at all, to post graduates and degrees. So don't think that you have to be VERY brainy to work in medicine because there is a job for everyone, as you will see from this presentation. To work in Medicine Basically, to work in health and medicine, you need: * Good communication and team work skills. A lot of the work you do will be as part of a team so you need to know how to behave and cooperate with other people. * To be reliable and conscientious. Your patients need to feel they can rely on you and come to you for any help. * Sensitivity, tact and understanding. (For those in patient contact) * An interest in science and technology. So don't just choose medicine because of your family, or because of the amount of money you get paid, that's just ridiculous. You need to have a genuine interest in science and technology. People with 5 GCSEs at Grades A ââ¬â C * Dental technicians make dental appliances such as dentures, crowns and braces as well as fittings for people with facial injuries. It is mainly a workshop job and most dental technicians work in commercial dental laboratories. o You need to be good with your hands and be interested in science and technology. * Dental Nurses work with dentists in hospitals, community clinics and private practices. They prepare fillings and dressing, pass instruments to the dentist, attend to the patients and sometimes act like receptionists too. Therefore you need to be calm and have a pleasant manner. * Medical technology covers the area of clinical physiology and medical physics. Concerned with measuring how well various parts of the body function and it involves working with sophisticated electronic machinery such as scanners or working in nuclear medicine. The technicians assist the professionally qualified staff in diagnosing and treating patients. * Biomedical scientists work mainly in hospital labs, carrying out tests on bodily tissues and fluids. There are opportunities for those without any formal qualifications to work as medical laboratory assistants and assist those that are professionally qualified. * Pharmacy technicians make up prescriptions and prepare medicines, supervised by a pharmacist. Accuracy is essential when you are working with drugs, as mistakes can be highly dangerous. It's largely behind-the-scenes job in a hospital or in a retail chemist's shop. * Dispensing opticians supply and fit glasses and contact lenses, working from the optometrists prescription. They are not qualified to do eye tests themselves. You need to be good with people and also enjoy selling. For people with A-levels or equivalent, or with higher qualifications. * Doctors diagnose and treat illness, but they also have a role in preventing disease. Qualified doctors can specialise in general practice, surgery, psychiatry, obstetrics, orthopaedics, paediatrics, ophthalmology, oncology and many other areas. Three very good A-levels are needed, including Chemistry and often two other sciences. * Dentists treat damaged and diseased teeth and gums, and also carry out preventative and corrective treatments. Dentists must be skilled with their hands and good at dealing with people under stress. * Dental therapists and hygienists advise people on how to look after their teeth and gums. They clean and scale teeth, and carry out other treatments prescribed by dental surgeons. Therapists are trained to do fillings and extractions on children. Medical illustrator, pharmacist & optometrist * Medical Photographers record operations, post mortem examinations, laboratory specimens and injuries at various stages of recovery. Medical photographs are used for patient's records, to help in diagnosis and to record patients' progress. Medical illustrators make illustrations, diagrams, visual aids and displays. Their work is mainly used for teaching, health education, medical journals, textbooks and for presentations. * Pharmacists supply drugs, medicines, preparations and appliances prescribed by doctors, either in hospital pharmacies or over the counter in a retail chemist's shop. They have to know a great deal about medicine and their effect on the body. * Optometrists test eyesight to detect and measure faulty vision, and prescribe lenses to correct it. They must also spot any diseases, which can show up as eye conditions and know when to refer patients to a doctor. Most optometrists work in private practice, but some work in the NHS. * Clinical psychologists treat people who have behavioural problems, learning difficulties, and conditions like anxiety and depression through a mixture of counselling and psychotherapy. After a psychology degree, comes postgraduate training. * Health Promotion is an area where experienced health professionals can enter. It raises our awareness of how to live a healthy lifestyle. The work involves organising campaigns, providing advice and support to other health professionals and health service managers. * Podiatrists treat all kinds of foot problems from verrucas to ulcers. They also try to stop such problems arising in the first place. * Dieticians advise patients about special diets to follow to control a medical condition or as part of their general recovery plan. They also advise hospital catering staff on nutrition. They may also work in health and fitness clubs. * Orthoptists work with patients, often children who have defective vision, abnormal eye movements or other correctable eye conditions. They prescribe eye exercises and check on their progress. * Radiographers can specialise in one of two areas. In diagnostic radiography, they help doctors to diagnose broken bones and other conditions using x-rays, ultrasound and other techniques. In therapeutic radiography or radiotherapy, small doses of radiation are used to treat patients with conditions such as cancer. * There are many different therapists. Physiotherapists help sick and injured people, and those with disabilities, to be as physically independent as possible. They use exercises, massage, heat and electrical treatment, hydrotherapy etc. o Occupational therapists help clients to be more independent through everyday activities, which will get their minds, muscles and joints working properly. Patients may need help because psychiatric problems or accidents. o Speech and language therapists work with clients who have speech and communication problems, which they may have been born with, or which has risen due o illness, injury, or as a result of psychological problems. Therapists need to be patient, resourceful and have good communication skills. o Art, music and drama therapists help patients on general psychiatric hospital units, clinics, special schools etc. dance therapists have a similar role.

Amenhotep iv & Egyptian
Amenhotep IV is an Egyptian king who is famous for introducing monotheistic religion in Egypt. Before his reign, Egyptian people worship many gods and the role of priest in their polytheistic religion. For a short period of time, he initiated a major religious revolution that affected the entire kingdom. In the early period of his reign, he changed his name from Amenhotep IV to Akhenaton. He changed his name after moving his capital to the newly designed city of Akhet-Aten. (euler. slu. edu) It depicts a major change in their religious belief.Akhenaton means ââ¬Å"the servant of Atenâ⬠. ââ¬Å"In the process of this religious revolution, Akhenaton placed him self as the intermediary between Aten and the people. This helped eliminate the need for the priesthood. As the only one with access to the god, Akhenaten established himself as a god-king and became the first king to be called Pharoah. â⬠(Chesser, ehistory) The removal of ââ¬Å"Amumâ⬠in his name is an indicati on that he is rejecting their old religion. Amum is one of their old god who is also known as god of secrets.ââ¬Å"To have effectively removed Amun from his name seems like an all-but-open declaration of warfare against the dominant religious authority in the day, the Amun priesthood based in Thebesâ⬠(usu. edu) Akhenaten was the son of Nebmaatre Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye. He was not the oldest royal son or the heir of the throne. His older brother Prince Tuthmosis was originally the heir of the throne but he died during the reign of Amenhotep III. (euler. slu. edu) Meanwhile, his wife is the famous Nefertiti which some scholars believed as Akhenaten himself or her mother.ââ¬Å"Evidence suggests she was wed to Akhenaten as the daughter of a high official during Amenhotep IIIââ¬â¢s reign, or of Amenhotep himself. Similarly, debate still remains as to whether or not Nefertiti was in fact the actual mother of Akhenaten, and his wife at the same time. The mysteries of Nefer titiââ¬â¢s origins remain a large topic of debate. â⬠(mnsu. edu) On the other hand, it was believed that it was Nefertiti who urged Akhenaten towards religious reformation. (mnsu. edu) Religious Reformation His first step of religious reformation is moving his capital from Thebes to Akhenaten. He imposed a monotheistic religion by placing Aten as the only subject of worship. ââ¬Å"Later, he went so far as to order the word ââ¬Å"godsâ⬠removed and changed to ââ¬Å"god,â⬠wherever it occurred on public inscriptions. â⬠(usu. edu) I was believed that the monotheistic belief of Akhenaten was inspired by Judaism through Moses or Joseph. But according to some scholars, Akhenaten belief is not purely monotheistic for the Apis cult maintained other gods. Because Akhenatenââ¬â¢s religious reformation was not really monotheistic, we canââ¬â¢t conclude that it was influenced by Judaism.(ancientegyptonline. co. uk) As part of his religious reformation, he opened Egyptian religion for all instead of being exclusive for Egyptian priest. The reason why he rejected Amun as god is because he is the god of secrets. Instead of worshipping a god of secret, he wanted the Egyptian people to worship a god like Aten which reflects its presence through the rays of sun. (usu. edu) Mark Damen described Akhetatenââ¬â¢s god as follows: ââ¬Å"The religious iconography of Akhenaten's new belief system centered around the aten as a divine presence.Representing the life-giving force of the universe, the sun-disk is often depicted in either abstract or personified form, occasionally both at the same time. Though it's most often pictured as a mere circle with rays of light radiating downward, the aten also appears sometimes with little hands appended onto the end of its solar beams holding out to worshipers the ankh, the Egyptian sign of life. In a few instances, the hands are even shoving the ankh rather unceremoniously up the noses of the blessed, a figura tive assertion, no doubt, that the sun offers the ââ¬Å"breath of life.â⬠It would seem less comical today if this sacrament didn't look so much like an incontinent ear-swab. â⬠(usu. edu) Although Akhenaten desired the entire Egptian people to have a relationship with Aten, still the said relationship became exclusive for Akhenaten and his family. Instead of worshipping Aten directly, they just worship the royal family. (ancientegyptonline. co. uk) ââ¬Å"All this concurs well with Akhenaten's religion, where the pharaoh was said to serve as the conduit between humanity and the Aten. In other words, it's through and because of him the sun-disk bestows life on the planet. In his own words, a hymn Akhenaten claims to have composed himself about the Atenâ⬠(usu. edu) One reason for this is the torturing heat of the sun in Egypt. One way of worshipping is standing under its presence and basking in its radiance. On the other hand, priests during his reign did not like his religious reformation. His own imposed religion disregard the significance of priest in their religious life for Akhenaten served as a priest. Threats in his kingdom During the Amama period, a widespread of famine and diseases affected the Egyptians. Scholars believed that a plague or influenza killed thousands of lives during that time.I was also believed that that was the same plague in the book of Exodus that there is no sufficient evidence for that. (ancientegyptonline. co. uk) Egyptians viewed this plague as a consequence of neglecting their other gods. Death According to archeologist, there are indications that Akhenaten died in his middle age. Maruti Suzuki in Indian Premium Car Segment
MARUTI SUZUKI & INDIAN PREMIUM CAR SEGMENT Interim Report ââ¬â Marketing Management INTRODUCTION: Indian automobile industry currently contributes 5% to Indiaââ¬â¢s current GDP of $1. 4 trillion. The projected size in 2016 of the Indian automotive industry varies between $ 122 billion and $ 159 billion including USD 35 billion in exports. This translates into a contribution of 10% to 11% towards Indiaââ¬â¢s GDP by 2016, which is more than double the current contribution. We can safely assume the passenger car market as a whole grows in the same phase if not more than mentioned above.Passenger cars have sub classifications with in them and they are as follows: SEGMENTATION OF INDIAN CAR MARKET: As per SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) The classification of segments are done as per length of the vehicle, (Passenger car segment) 1. A1 ââ¬â Mini ââ¬â Up to 3400mm (M800, Nano) 2. A2 ââ¬â Compact ââ¬â 3401 to 4000mm (Alto, wagon r, Zen,i10,A-st ar,Swift,i20,palio,indica etc) 3. A3 ââ¬â Midsize ââ¬â 4001 to 4500mm (City,Sx4,Dzire,Logan,Accent,Fiesta,Verna etc) 4. A4 ââ¬â Executive ââ¬â 4501 to 4700mm (Corolla, civic,C class,Optra,Octavia, etc) 5.A5 ââ¬â Premium ââ¬â 4701 to 5000mm (Camry,Eclass,Accord,Sonata,Laura,Superb, etc) 6. A6 ââ¬â Luxury ââ¬â Above 5000mm (S class,5 series etc) 7. B1 ââ¬â Van ââ¬â Omni, Versa, Magic etc 8. B2 ââ¬â MUV/MPV ââ¬â Innova, Tavera, Sumo etc 9. SUV ââ¬â CRV, Vitara etc A segment, B segment etc. were used earlier. But now the segmentation in India is done on the basis of length. Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the leading passenger cars producer, currently holds a market share of about 45% in the passenger vehicles segment. The dominant share of the current 45% has primarily come from passenger cars that belong to the Mini/Compact hatchback or midsize sedan. As Maruti Suzuki started its operations in 1981 the needs of the countryââ¬â¢s automot ive industries were affordable/entry level cars which Maruti very successfully catered to. But very recently the executive, premium and luxury segment cars are growing more than 20% every year which is higher than the growth of the compact passenger cars. Here is a data which reiterates the growth of premium segment cars in India. The data shows the number of cars whose price is in the range of 15lakh to 30 lakh. Model| 2004/05| 2006| 2007-08| 2008| 2009| 2010| 2011| Skoda superb| Na| 769| 586| 694| 541| 2078| |BMW 3 series| -| -| 946| 1,075 (FY09)| 1,155| 2,220 (Jan-Nov)| | Audi A4| -| -| 102| 1,050| 1,658| 3,003| 4,210 (Q1-Q3)| Mercedes c class| 785| 883| 1,127| 1,765| 1,607| 5,109 ( Jan-Nov)| 3,233 (Jan-May)| The above data clearly shows there is a strong growth in the premium segment that is being seen in the Indian passenger segment. So how far can Maruti Suzuki, a pioneer in small car segment, address the changing trends of Indian car market. Can it replicate the success of sm all car sales in to the premium segment also?In order to identify the needs and the values of the luxury class and their views and expectations on Maruti entering premium car segment we conducted the following interviews which are given below INTERVIEWS WITH POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS: INTERVIEW 1: What is your profile? I am Prakhar Sharma. I am an electronics engineer and had been working for BEL for the last one year. At present I am a student in IIM Bangalore. Do you own a sedan? If yes, which car? My father would be the rightful owner of the cars that we possess. He is a Government officer. We currently own a SX4 petrol version. It is the ââ¬Ëfully loadedââ¬â¢ petrol version, and we own it for over a year. Do you own any other car? We do own a Maruti 800, which is around 20 years old. Apart from that, my father has his office car as well. We thought about buying a new car because the Maruti 800 was very old. What are the various factors you considered before you bought the car? Ge nerally when a person is looking to buy a sedan, it is his second or third car purchase. There are various factors people consider while buying a car. Personally, the factors I feel that influence my choice are Style, Power, Ergonomics and driving experience. This is of course taking into account that certain minimum requirements are met by the cars in this category. What other cars did you compare with before buying the SX4? There are a number of options available in this price range. We had basically zeroed down up on SX4 and Honda City. The Honda City is a really good car as well. The best thing I liked about it was the experience. It is extremely smooth with a feather touch power steering. The design and interiors are really nice as well. What made you choose the SX4 over the Honda City? We had a fixed budget assigned towards the car, with a flexibility of around 1 lakh.Within that budget the two cars I really liked was SX4 and Honda City. However, the Honda City base model would cost us as much as the SX4 fully loaded model (with all features already installed). So we felt that it was better value for money, and went along to buy the SX4. Apart from that, some other factors which influenced our decision was that maintenance costs of Maruti is very low, spare parts are readily available and donââ¬â¢t really cost that high either. If you are looking to upgrade to a higher end sedan, would you go for a Maruti again?Say Kizashi? If I assume that I do not have any budget constraints, then I probably would not go for a Maruti. The new Kizashi seems good as far as design and technical specifications are concerned, but the name Maruti has a perception attached to it. Maruti is the car that was trusted by your parents and grand-parents, it is the car that almost every Indian owns. If I want to own a high end sedan, I would want to show it off as well. I feel that would not be possible with the Maruti tag associated with it. It does not have that association of e xclusivity. So I would rule out Maruti in the first place and go for a brand which is not possessed by too many people. INTERVIEW 2: What is your profile? I am Vaibhav Singh, I graduated from IIT Kanpur. Currently am a PGP-I student at IIM Bangalore. Prior to joining IIMB I worked at National Instruments for almost 3 years. Do you own a car now? If yes what is the car Yes, I own a Maruti 800. What are the facts you like and dislike about your current car? I feel a sense of safety in case of Maruti mainly because itââ¬â¢s a trusted brand especially in India. Secondly itââ¬â¢s low on maintenance and its spares are readily available. Also Maruti has a strong service network. What I donââ¬â¢t like about Maruti, I get confused as there are many cars in the same segment and itââ¬â¢s very difficult to select. Do you have any other cars in the family? Which one do you like comparatively? Yes we also own a Ford Figo. I like Figo over Maruti 800 as it is newer and has many more feat ures. Are you planning to upgrade your car now? What are the key features you look for in the car? I may upgrade after in a couple of years from now and mostly to a sedan. The key features I will look for would be i. Brand value. How itââ¬â¢s perceived in the market. ii.Quality iii. Price iv. Features If Maruti comes up with a new car would you be willing to consider it? Why or why not? I will mostly not consider Maruti as my option. The reason is that I associate Maruti with low cost so there is a brand disconnect. I would rather consider a Honda or Toyota. What do you think about the new car Maruti has launched Kizashi? When I saw the car it was portrayed as a sports sedan but I think the looks could have been better. Basically, I donââ¬â¢t perceive Maruti car as a sports sedan. When a car is that expensive it should also add status which I think Maruti does not add. What can Maruti do so that you will consider it as an option? I think what most other companies have done by s eparating the brand specific for luxury cars, Maruti should do something similar. If possible leverage on some brand that concentrates on luxury segment alone. If not anything else, they should atleast use just ââ¬ËSuzukiââ¬â¢ and not ââ¬ËMaruti Suzukiââ¬â¢ to launch a car in targeted segment. Finally what are the two main reasons why you will not buy a Maruti in the luxury segment? 1. There will not be any status enhancement 2. I do not associate Maruti with high performance.I only think it is low cost and reliable. INTERVIEW 3: What is your profile? I am Shobhit Agrawal from Delhi. I completed my graduation from St. Stephenââ¬â¢s College. Currently am a PGP-I student at IIM Bangalore. Do you own a car? If yes, which? Yes, we own a Volkswagen Polo for over a year. We also own a Maruti 800 but itââ¬â¢s not in a major use now. What you like and dislike about your current car? We bought Polo because it was one of the better cars in terms of performance in that price range. We preferred a top-end version of hatchback over a low-end version of a bigger car.Polo has many features and most importantly we wanted a car that is new and different from the ones generally present in society. So Polo met most of our needs. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing specific which I donââ¬â¢t like so far. If you want to upgrade your car in future what will it be to? What are the key features you would look for in the car? If I upgrade my car in future, it might be to a sedan. Key features I would consider are i. Performance (engine) and mileage ii. Value for money ââ¬â The car should be ergonomically comfortable, it should have good features, better quality and good interior design & aesthestics iii.Brand ââ¬â It should make a statement. iv. It should also have a good dealership network and servicing network. Suppose you would want a luxury sedan, and Maruti launch cars it that segment. Would you consider Maruti as your option? Why or why not? As I mentioned th e key features I would be looking for in a new luxury sedan car, If I feel that a Maruti sedan meets my requirements, I may consider it as my option. But since such an investment is considerably large and highly infrequent, brand will also play an important role in selection as it is a status symbol.Whatââ¬â¢s your view about Maruti Suzuki SX4 and Kizashi compared to competitors in their segment? When I see SX4 against Honda City, SX4 seems to be lower in class although it is not. Similarly if I compare Kizashi with Accord or Camry, Kizashi seem to be slightly lower. This I think is mainly because people associate Maruti with small cars than sedans and luxury cars. What do you Maruti lacks to be in luxury sedan segment? What should it do? I think Maruti lacks an image of luxury car maker. It is generally associated with small cars owing to its leadership in that segment. In order to be more successful, Maruti will have to develop expertise and capability to compete in that segment . SURVEY ANALYSIS So from the discussions with the consumers we have come to the following conclusions regarding whether they would prefer to buy a Maruti in the sedan segment the following conclusions can be drawn. 1) The major reason is that Maruti is associated with a low cost car. It is a very trusted brand as many of the people interviewed were either owners or had owned a Maruti car in the past and were very satisfied with the product. However the brand is not associated with a status symbol so people upgrading will most probably not prefer a Maruti even if the product and the price is same of competition. 2) Another reason for non-acceptance is that there a real as well as perceived difference between the competitors and Maruti. When we compare higher end cars by Maruti with others in the segment, it fails to beat the established standards by other brands. For e. g. In a 2. 4 Lit engine car segment, it is perceived by the consumers that Toyota and Honda cars will have a superi or engine than Marutiââ¬â¢ s engine. Also they are perceived to provide a better quality in terms of aesthetics to the buyer. For this reason, even though, Maruti Suzuki SX4 was launched in the same segment as Honda City, it was always considered to be lower than City. 3) One reason for people not to consider the car is that they feel the resale value will not be good. As many people in these segments buy cars and switch between 3-5 years resale value is an important consideration and this is where Maruti lags behind a lot compared to a Honda or a Toyota SOME POINTS WERE ALSO IN FAVOUR OF MARUTI: ) Most of the people have already owned a Maruti and were very satisfied with the product and have a high opinion of its after sales service and cheaper spare parts so they think that compared to the others the maintenance cost will be low. Therefore after analysing the 4 interviews we can come to the conclusion that Maruti cannot be seen as a status symbol that most people upgrading to h igher end cars look for. However this segment is growing at a very fast rate compared to the average industry so this is a segment Maruti cannot afford to ignore. The advertisements and promotions for their latest car Kizashi also could not generate much excitement among the customers like what Mahindra Scorpioââ¬â¢s advertisements did so this could be one area they could look at. So the key questions going ahead for us will be: * Maruti has enter the segment with its current brand the following table shows the specifications of Maruti Kizashi and its competitors Technical Specification and Pricing * As shown in the table above even with similar specifications and competitive pricing Kizashi was not able to catapult its sales figures as done by Accord (3324 unitsââ¬â 2005-06) and Camry (794 unitsââ¬â 2005-06).So the burning question is does it need a new brand either fully made by themselves like Toyota did with Lexus or should they come into collaboration or acquire a lux ury brand and enter into the market * Will Maruti be able to use the current distribution channel to effectively market the cars? With the same dealership network having two types of customers, one targeting an entry level hatchback and the other targeting a luxury sedan served effectively? Or will they need a new dealership network for high segments cars for specific target consumer which can be a costly affair.

Stylistic Analysis. Doctor in the House
ââ¬Å"Doctor in the houseâ⬠is written by Richard Gordon a real shipââ¬â¢s surgeon and an assistant editor of the British Medical Journal. The story deals with describing process of exams, difficulties provided by them and studentsââ¬â¢ feelings and thoughts before and after examinations. The general slant of the story is quite tense, gloomy and even a bit depressed. It makes the Reader feel anxious and it forces us to have a disagreeable sense of a heavy load because we worry about the narratorââ¬â¢s success at the exam. The author manages to create such an atmosphere by an abundant use of similes. He compares examinations with a serious contest, an eight-round fight, a final breathless sprint and even with death. All these devices leave a very vivid description of the studentsââ¬â¢ anticipating such an unpleasant inevitability as the exam. By means of the authorââ¬â¢s language our imagination depicts a distinct and colorful picture proving the effectiveness of t he stylistic devices in Gordonââ¬â¢s description. Itââ¬â¢s hard to believe but suspense is even growing from one paragraph to another turning just an investigation of a manââ¬â¢s knowledge into judgment day. Also read: The Man With The Scar AnalysisAnd to my mind this allusion is chosen nonrandom but to emphasize a meaning of the exam for candidates. And Gordon asserts that if an examinee loses his nerve heââ¬â¢s like a cow in a bog and soon he will be finished. But not all students act like this and knowing that the author focuses his attention on describing different psychological types of candidates. He pictures them with common understandable vocabulary which refers us to life and makes the portraits very convincing. At the same time Gordon adds some tiny but significant details like the Nonchalant lolling back on the chair, the Franky Worried tearing his invitation, the Crammer fondling his books, the Old Stager treating like a photographer at a wedding. Besides an attentive Reader could notice how skillfully the author names these types underlining their essences and expressing them shortly just in one word. Meanwhile despite of a psychological type everybody can find no peace af ter the exam not knowing anything about their results. And the author perfectly conveys studentsââ¬â¢ sense of futility and despair considering these days to be black. It helps the Reader to guess how difficult to cope with such a condition when you are numbed, unable to realize what has happened and everything you can is just hope for the better. This is precisely what the author says about pernicious aftereffect of exams. So as I said the suspense is still growing especially when the results are about to come out. Gordon gives us a very unusual and picturesque image of the speechless world where everything isnââ¬â¢t going to stir, not a leaf. The Reader has already got used to a high speed of the story and this sudden stop makes a great contrast in mood between the whole text and the last part. But this stillness is fake the narratorââ¬â¢s heart is on a point of leaping out of his chest. The description of the heroââ¬â¢s state is highly emotional. His wet palms, burning face, pulse in his ears keeps the Reader in so great tension which disappears at once after just one word ââ¬Ëpassââ¬â¢. And a long-awaited relief covers the narrator and the reader because the author ideally coped with his main task ââ¬â he hold our attention during the whole narration compelling us to feel we are inside of this story.

BUS401 Wk 3 Discussions - Assignment Example The analysis of the current market condition is critical in determining which marketing strategies work well in given situations. The assessment of opportunities is crucial in a strategic alternative bundle. This enables the management to spot and take advantage of new customer groups as well as to expand into other geographical markets. The strategic alternative plan also comprises of identification of the target market. The management must gather information to guide them in the potential consumer tastes and preferences (Nanjundaiah & Ramesh, 2010). The goals of an alternative strategic plan are important in the realization of greater revenue and efficiency. The strategies that transform the goals into results include pricing, promotional and distribution strategy. The strategic alternative bundles should be implemented in a given period. The time line devotes each department to the time limit for the implementation of a task. Companies that need good strategic alternative bundles should adopt a strategy that suits their budget. A contingency plan is the action that an organization implements in the event that an unplanned incident occurs (Nanjundaiah & Ramesh, 2010). The alternative plan is rolled out in case the expected outcome fails to materialize. The unfortunate happenings that hinder the materialization of plans are known as triggers. Companies that have contingency plans react quicker to disaster, stay ahead of their competitors, enjoy confident leadership and enables more accurate forecast on market trends. A good contingency plan should be time conscious. It should define the phase for the implementation of a plan. The plan should identify the trigger and determine the situations under which the plan can be implemented (Nanjundaiah & Ramesh, 2010). The plan should be plain and in simple language. The plan should be considerate of available resources as well as identify the

Bonus 4 assignment - Essay Example The study will focus on bars as the centers to pick the subjects. For the study, three bars have been identified. At the first bar, the researcher sits down, asks a provocative question so as to watch who are the possible subjects at the bar (Dryfoos, 1991). Question: Who hates high school life? After the question, at least a response will be raised and then the respondents will be questioned personally whether they dropped out of school. The choice of the three bars is also based on the information that high school dropouts frequent them. For the study, five subjects are needed from each bar. At the first bar, after questioning those who responded to the first question, it is likely to get a 2/4 school dropout number as the timing will be 11 am ââ¬â 12 Noon, when non-working, non-school going, dropouts frequent the bar. After identifying the five subjects, they will be assured of their confidentiality, then the survey forms will be administered so the subjects will fill it out (Dryfoos, 1991). The questions will include: How much do you drink and smoke? What were the causes for starting to drink and when? Why did you drop out of school ââ¬â were you suspended or expelled for drug use, and had you started drinking before dropping out? What effect did the company you kept after dropping out of school play? Did you have trouble during early years of school? Did you perform well at school, and did you have problems at home during your schooling time? (b). Purposive sampling: will involve the study of the entire groups at the three bars during our timing of study: 11 am -12 noon. From interviewing all the members at the bars during that time, the school dropouts will be identified and the information from them compiled. The questions to be asked during the interview include: Are you a high school dropout? If yes, the interview will continue, if NO, they

Evaluation of Mexican Diet Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Evaluation of Mexican Diet - Essay Example Moreover, the report attempts to provide a summary on the nutritional value of traditional Mexican food and the impact of modern technology on the nutritional value of modern Mexican cuisine. Overview: Mexican gastronomy reflects a unique blend of aboriginal cuisine fused with Spanish and French culture and there is more to it then simply the cheese covered tacos, enchiladas, burritos or refried bacon. The rich history, varied topography and exotic cuisine are the reasons why Mexico attracts millions of tourists each year from around the world. Mexican cuisine has been molded by a myriad of cultural influences which accounts for the diversity of its dishes. The diversity of Mexican cuisine is what makes it a truly fascinating subject. For instance, the barbacoa of Central Colonial region is strikingly different from the black mole of Oaxaca. The diversity of Mexican cuisine is due to the fact that each of the aboriginal dishes were developed and influenced by the environmental factor s indigenous to their respective regions such as availability of ingredients, trade practices, local economics, explorers, colonial settlers, immigrants and the culture of local individuals. Mexico is often divided into six gastronomic regions each of which are famous for their own unique indigenous cuisine. The six gastronomic regions are La Frontera (Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas), La Costa Oro (the pacific coast from Sinaloa to Guerrero), El Istmo (the isthmus of Tehuatepec and also includes the states of Tabasco, Oaxaca, and Veracruz), La Encrucijada (includes the City of Mexico and its adjoining states), El Centro Colonial (the colonial cities of Guadalajara, San Miguel de Allende, Zacatecas, Queretaro, Morelia, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi) and La Teirra Mava (Chiapas, certain areas of Tabasco and Yucatan peninsula). The innumerable individual styles and traditional techniques used in the preparation of authentic Mexican food accoun t for the uniqueness of the cuisine. (HOYER et al 2005). Environmental Factors: Mexico is regarded as one of the worldââ¬â¢s most blessed lands due to its favorable climate, fertile soil and the varied productions of nature. Mexico is capable of producing large amounts of cocoa, sugar, cotton, wheat, hemp, flex, silk, oil, wine, fruits, and cochineal. Therefore, Mexico is a nation that is capable of producing products which the commerce gathers from around the world. The production of vegetables is influenced both by the difference in elevation and latitude. A study of Mexican history reveals that the varied climate and topography across the six gastronomic regions have heavily influenced the production of vegetables which in turn has influenced the ingredients used by aboriginal people in the preparation of food. For instance, the eastern and western coasts have tracks of low land which have a climate similar to that of West Indies. Therefore, the vegetables produced in eastern and western coasts are similar to that produced in West Indies. On the other hand, the ascending sides of Cordilleras have a temperate climate, thus, the grains and vegetable production is similar to that of the temperate regions of the world. The high Mexican mountains are popular for their pine and fir production. Therefore, embarking on a two day journey from Vera Cruz to the Central regions provides the opportunity to experience and observe all the graduations of climate and vegetable production which are experienced in travelling from the equator to the Arctic regions. (GREGORY 1947). Major Dietary Components of Mayan Indian and Aztec Populations: The major
Arbitration Construction between Dubai and Yemen Case Study
Arbitration Construction between Dubai and Yemen - Case Study Example In addition, the decisions reached through arbitration are taken generally as enforceable. In addition to arbitration, the road to mediation can also be pursued as a means of alternative dispute resolution but such a discussion is beyond the scope of the current issue at hand. However, it must be taken to note that the outcomes of mediation are typically non-binding on the involved disputing parties. Arbitration has traditionally been in use for the settlement of commercial disputes between parties. More specifically, the practice of arbitration has been applied to international commercial disputes since the issue of court jurisdiction is bound to arise in international commercial disputes. The general rules applicable to arbitration are often encased in the commercial contract that is created between the involved parties. Another aspect of the arbitration process is the role of the arbitrator. As opposed to mediation, the arbitrator will not have to find common ground between the disputing parties. Instead, the arbitrator is only bound by tradition to examine the presented evidence and to reach a final verdict without any requirement to find common ground. The arbitrator can and generally does provide a determination of the incurred liability and also might subscribe to the quantified damages.

HR external consultant recommendation - Essay Example The HR Director has reservations about the transferability of the HR systems from an American context to the EU legislation, cultural and HR aspects. There are also concerns regarding the induction process for the expatriate workers. This paper aims at discussing the problems that Fantasia Corp will be anticipating in the process of implementing an HR system developed in the US in France. This paper will also give suggestions on how Fantasia Corp can overcome these challenges. In the last few decades, there has been a significant increase in the rate in which business organizations opt for global operations. Going for global markets present companies with more opportunities. Similarly, Fantasia Corp has also opted to expand their operations to Europe, with France being their targeted country. Recent researches reveal that organizations operating in different geographical environments usually have to operate under different HR practices and policies (Festing 2012, p. 43). This is due to the difference in social, political, cultural, and economic factors. Just like many other managerial practices, HRM is always affected by cultural beliefs. This is a factor that multinational corporations must take into consideration when intending to transfer some of their HR practices and policies to another country. Some of the practices that are socially allowed in America might not be admissible in France. This is a clear indication that some of the practices that have been successfully used by Fantasia Corp in the US might not be applicable in France. Therefore transferring the HR system used by Fantasia Corp in the US to France might have some performance consequences of their operations in France. HR researches have it that multinational corporations such as Fantasia Corp have to adapt to a certain degree to the cultural beliefs and practices of a host country. It should not be forgotten that in their operations

MONOPOLIES AND CARTELS - Research Paper Example The effect of this to all industry players and stakeholders is that competition has arisen and become very keen. Today, it takes only a company with improved strategic plan and implantation policy to survive and succeed as a first force In the midst of competition, the only way to survive and be successful is to follow a set od economic principles that makes you stand out among your competitors. In this regard, it could be seen that the companies that have succeeded in the airline industry since the deregulation of the industry have devised the creation of competitive advantages over their competitors to succeed. Indeed through the creation of competitive advantage, successful companies have critically studies and researched into the weaknesses of their competitors and built on those weaknesses to create major strengths for themselves (quote). This way, they successful companies offer to customers and clients, services that the customers and clients look for in the conduct of their daily business that have been missing. Consequently, they become the preferred choice because they are what the customers desire to patronize. A typical example can be given using the customer satisfaction as a competitive advantage. Mos t successful companies have come to realize that running an airline is not just about offering cheap prices for services and products but making customers feel comfortable and satisfactorily treated. To this end, they embark on a strategic customer satisfaction principle to ensure that they become the preferred options for customers who want satisfied services. Clearly, companies that been struggling have refused to employ basic principles of research and development, commonly referred to as R&D. With a highly competitive industry that is virtually free of all forms of monopoly today, it would take only an intensive research and development policy by failing companies to
